I believe that the lessons you learned and applied as a 10-year old with the simple task of “building a fort” can be applied to launching the company you always wanted to. By orienting your mental framework as a 10-year old and focusing on the leap and those first critical steps, I posit that you will place yourself in a better position. I will break down my personal fort-building experiences and use them as an analogy related to my journey of building MapQuest as well as The Startup Factory

Building the Fort outlines four basic elements that are common to both fort-building and startups:

  1. Socializing Your Idea

  2. Identifying and Marshaling the People You Trust

  3. Gathering the Minimal Resources Closest To You

  4. Acting on the Smallest and Simplest of the Idea.
